Taipei

The first place I lived outside the US. Two years, a Gold Card, and permanent residency.

Taiwan was the first place I lived outside America. I first came in the early days of the pandemic, after Tinder went remote. It was my first time spending months in Asia, and I wasn’t quite adjusted. Working on American hours from Asia wore on me, so after a few months I went back to the US to finish my time at Tinder.

After I left Tinder, a friend told me about the Taiwan Gold Card, and I got one because it seemed like a nice option to have. Then I visited Taiwan again. My lease in Los Angeles was almost up, I already had the Gold Card, and I’d always wanted to learn Chinese, so I moved to Taipei on a whim.

Tenet was already making monthly recurring revenue from Dream Interpreter AI, so I could keep building from anywhere. I ran a small remote team from here (how that went).

I stayed about two years and got permanent residency, which I still keep. My Chinese is around B1 now. From Taipei I moved to Bangkok on a DTV visa.

I still try to visit Taiwan a few times a year, to see friends and keep my connection to the place, especially since I’m a permanent resident.
